Otakon 2011 Review

Written August 4th, 2011

Seeing that I suck at making videos and don't plan on blowing my nose every ten seconds, I decided to write the review instead. This year was a good year, but a rather different experience. You'll learn about it.

The Game Room | My Tournament

The game room looked bigger this year, and was filled with new games, which was a plus. I mostly played Tekken 6, since that was the tournament I was entering. I was there all day to prepare for my tournament on Friday, and I've learned that practicing as much as you can against the computer is futile if you're training to beat a human opponent. Due to me never practicing against human competition, I got my ass kicked left and right, and throughout the whole weekend, I've only won five or six casual matches. I'm not complaining, though, since this was Otakon, so of course there would be experienced gamers here. As for my tournament, I made it to the second round. Again, I'm not complaining; I got past the first round, and that's all I wanted.

I didn't want to play MVC3 because there were no 360 controllers, and there were only PS3 controllers and pads, but that's not a con here. However, I would say that one of the cons here were that when playing Tekken, there would be people who wouldn't give up their seats after the three win limit. Hell, there was a guy who didn't give up his seat after 17 straight wins, and it gets worse when someone beats him and then repeat the cycle. What's the point of waiting in line for twenty minutes just to get your ass kicked in forty-five seconds? Plus, people would shake their heads whenever one would screw up in the fight. Not very encouraging, guys.

Tekken: Blood Vengeance

Great movie; that is all I can say. The only problem was that people would talk during the movie and literally kill the deepest moments in it with dirty comments and their lack of maturity. I even smelled someone eating Taco Bell behind me, chowing away while conversing with the person next to them.  Other than that, it was a good film, and I didn't have to pay to go watch it.

Para Para Panel

I really had a lot of fun here, despite screwing up when getting the routine being taught. I managed to get down the routine by the end, but pretty quickly though (probably because it wasn't my first time doing Para Para).
The song of the routine was very high-energy and fun, too. Someone even came up and complimented me. Nothing went wrong here.

The Rave
Friday Night was amazing. I partied with friends, danced to Mortal Kombat, and chickened out of hopping into a circle. Later on, I left and thought about heading into a 18+ panel, but went back to the game room before heading home.

Saturday, however, was more of a solo act. A friend couldn't make it so I went on my own. Not the greatest idea. All I did was watch people do Capoeira and dance in circles. Didn't hop in because I can't dance very well. Despite running into some friends and danced with them for a while, the night was pretty lonely, and it made it worse that two of my favorite songs came on. Besides from that, people kept shoving and bumping into me. I'm fully aware of it being a rave, but seriously people. Ramming into others like a SWAT officer grows to get very annoying. I'm not complaining though, since I had a good time throughout the weekend. The night just didn't go as planned. At least the Capoeira made it awesome.

Aftermath

As a result of this weekend, I got sick, or caught, "The Con Plague", which is why I didn't record the video. The Ice Cold Water Guy became a meme. I missed the CHEMISTRY concert, unfortunately, but the AMV Contest was still going on around that time. I didn't get Nobuo Uematsu's autograph, but the line was too long to begin with, as I was told. People were rude; some were not. I met new people, learned to have fun by myself, and had fun regardless. As of now, my agenda consists of:

-Getting my college classes and schedule done.
-Learn popping/locking/waving for Katsucon.
-Get back to making AMV's.
-Practice for Katsucon Idol 2012 (if there is another).

That's about it.
